Astanga, or occasionally spelled ashtanga Yoga is really educated now by a guy named Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, in Mysore, India. He still teaches now at 91 years old and has brought astanga yoga to the west about 25 years ago. Astanga yoga started with the rediscovery of the early manuscript Yoga Korunta. It describes an unique system of Hatha yoga created by the ancient sage Vamana Rishi and practiced. It’s considered to be the first asana practiced meant by Patanjali.

The Yoga Korunta highlights vinyasa, or breath-synchronized movement, where one practices a position with special breathing patterns connected with that. This breathing technique is called the winning breath, or ujayyi pranayama, which is a procedure that generates intense internal heat and a profuse perspiration that detoxifies and purifies organs and the muscles. This also discharges nutrients and valuable hormones, and is generally massaged back into the body. The result is improved circulation, a light and powerful body and a serene head.
